Tropical Rainforest
Tropical rainforests are the world's
most diverse and productive ecosystems, housing over half of all living species on
Earth. Their value is incalculable. In addition to their beauty,
these forests absorb carbon dioxide are a virtually untapped
genetic resource of plants.
The
unfortunate reality is that destruction of tropical rainforests continues at
an accelerating pace. Throughout the tropics, forests are logged for precious hardwoods. Others are burned to make way for
large farming or cattle ranching operations. These biological
resources once covered more than 14%
of the Earth's land area; they are now less than 6% . At the current rates of destruction, only a few tattered forests will remain in the next century. We must act together to
stop the destruction and save what is left for future generations.
Tropical rainforests
are located in the areas marked below.
A tropical
rainforests is defined by its location between the Tropics of Cancer and
Capricorn.
They are considered rainforests
because of the enormous precipitation totals they receive annually. Some areas of the rainforest receive more than 200 days of
rain each year!
