FITNESS RETREAT TIPS

Go for the long disconnect if you can. There is a definite benefit from not checking in with work or home when you are on a fitness retreat. The extended absence of connection with the "real life" leaves you more rejuvenated than if checking in even once or twice during your retreat. It takes a couple of days before you can really unwind. An interruption with a call from the office midweek will break the relaxation.

Go lo-tech. Spending time at a fitness retreat isn't going to give you all the potential benefit if you can't leave your laptop, pager and cell-phone off your packing list. If you "just MUST to check in" you might want to - reschedule for a better time or give ONE trusted person a number of where to reach you if it's really important and let them be the judge.

Don't expect miracles, but you might just get them. If you expect too much and think a week at a fitness resort will turn you into a super-fit bundle of health or make you loose 10 lbs, you might get disappointed. However, you WILL feel much better, and you WILL get much fitter, and it MIGHT inspire you to lead a healthier life when you get back. What you do today and every day is what will get you fit and healthy - the fitness retreat is just a bonus.

What about that massage? Get a massage! nothing is more soothing after a hard workout than a real good massage. Is it your first? Even if you are the modest type, you can feel comfortable. You will be covered by a sheet and the massage therapist, who is a trained professional works around it, keeping your tush covered.

Bring clothes that you are comfortable in and regularly wear. Don't go out and buy a bunch of stuff for the trip. A water bottle is good, as are sunglasses and a cap or a hat. Oh...and don't forget a good book and the sunscreen!!!

Get the most out of it. If you are going to a fitness retreat to give your non-existent exercise routine a boost - please start before you go! You will get much more out of it if you are just a little bit prepared- that way you are also less likely to injure yourself, get so sore you can't move, or get discouraged. Just three weeks of preparation will make a big difference!

Try something new! Fitness resorts often have many activities on the menu. Try stuff you never do at home! A vacation from your regular exercise rut is good. Never done yoga? Try it! Don't know how to use fitness machines? Have them show you how! Are you an avid runner? Try a long hike for a change, or take a tennis class.

Indulge yourself...Most fitness resorts offer massages, body treatments and other spa services for an extra fee. Budget the cost of these treatments, plus tips into what you plan to spend on your vacation, it gives you peace of mind - not stressing about "extra charges." A massage and a treatment or two will give that extra sparkle in your eye and the bounce in your step then you return from your trip.
