WHAT
IS HEMP, ANYWAY?
Hemp is a very
durable plant called 'cannabis sativa' that has been grown for
thousands of years. The stalk of the plant can be used to make
yarn and a tough canvass cloth. Cannabis pulp, seeds and oil
can be transformed into paper, food and paints, respectively.
While these industrial forms of hemp (stalk, roots, seeds) are
non-intoxicating, the flower and leaves of the cannabis plant are
the illegal drug marijuana. Therefore, it remains illegal to
grow industrial hemp in the United States.
Hemp is popular with
the environmental community because cannabis is a very
environmentally-friendly plant -- not because of the
marijuana-hippie connection !
It has an extremely rapid growth cycle of 120 days, requires little
fertilizer or pesticides, and can thrive in a variety of climates
and soils.
