Eco-Friendly Furnishings
By Andy Summa

Photo: Recycled cardboard rocking chair.Buying new furniture is often a daunting task for an environmentalist. Is the wood harvested from endangered rainforests? Does the furniture encourage unsustainable forestry practices? Will it match my carpet?

Though color coordination is up to you, Eco-Furniture puts to rest environmental concerns. The company uses SmartWood, a program that provides independent, objective evaluation of forest management practices, forest products, timber sources and companies. SmartWood certifies that forest products come from sustainable or well-managed forests.

Eco-Furniture also utilizes reclaimed lumber from old buildings, bridges, barns, ships, warehouses, wine tanks and other structures. Using reclaimed lumber keeps hundreds of tons of top-notch building materials from going to waste.

Photo: Reclaimed wood furniture.Eco-Furniture sells a beautiful audio cabinet ($1,995) that is made of almost exclusively of reclaimed lumber. A classy bar table and stools set ($550) is made of salvaged old-growth Western Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar from forests in the coastal regions of British Columbia.

Poly-Wood products are also popular at Eco-Furniture. Poly-Wood products start as dairy containers and soda bottles once destined for landfills. You can buy a luxurious, bi-color pet bed ($69) that utilizes Poly-Wood, and saves 150 bottles from the landfill.

Vintage Timber Furniture

Whit McLeod chairThis beautiful Whit McLeod chair is made from old wine vats that would otherwise have wound up in a landfill. You can find it and many others at Willow Glen Kitchen and Bath.

Other craftsmen making high quality FURNITURE FROM VINTAGE TIMBER:

  • Vintage Redwood Company: Raw materials taken from dismantled redwood and oak wine vats milled fifty to one hundred years ago are crafted into beautiful furniture designed to last for generations.

  • Perkins Wood: An in-house design team design a full line of enduring, collectible furniture crafted from reclaimed vintage wood. Sturdy, informal, yet elegant.

  • The Craftsman Home: Arts and Crafts furniture from reclaimed and salvaged materials.

  • Annapolis Furniture: Each piece of vintage pine timber is hand-selected for its individual grain and coloring, giving it a genuinely antique appearance. Once selected, it is carefully de-nailed, sawn, planed, and manufactured into period furniture.

  • Mesmeraldas: Individually handcrafted in Georgia by Two Day Designs, this furniture is made from antique wood reclaimed from sources such as old barns, mills and warehouses.

  • Vintage Timber: Vintage Timberworks supplies recycled seasoned old growth lumber, beams, timbers, and antique flooring reclaimed from the dismantling of antiquated structures in which it has been "warehoused" for up to 200 years.
Wild & Natural

After years of plant breeding to combine the beautiful colors of wild cottons with the superior fiber and agronomic properties of commercial organic white cottons, Sally Fox developed the first naturally colored cotton that could be processed with modern textile machines.
