About eight percent of women of child-bearing age, millions of American women, have blood mercury concentrations higher than the level considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency. This means that over 600,000 newborns are exposed to mercury above EPA’s safe level each year. Raising vegetarian babies

Raising a vegetarian baby can be a daunting task for any new parent. But you’re not alone. More and more parents are realizing the virtues of an animal-free diet for both themselves and their children.

New parents around the world have joined www.vegetarianbaby.com, a website dedicated to the nutrition and health of children of all ages. The site began as a simple online newsletter in 1998, but has mushroomed into a site that includes recipes, tips, contact information and a product line that includes T-shirts, books and pillowcases.

The site’s newsletter, “Vegetarian Baby and Child,” has subscribers in Australia, Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan and The Netherlands. There is also updated information on vegetarian pregnancy, finding supportive doctors and daycare, and dealing with a non-vegetarian spouse.

The site is maintained by Melanie Wilson, an educator and vegan chef who joined the vegetarian movement with the birth of her daughter.
