What should I expect from a B&B?
If you expect exactly what its name calls out, then you won't be disappointed. Even though many B&B's offer extras, you are likely to be disappointed if you want basket loads of amenities, bathrobes and turndown chocolates. Though occasionally you can score this too. You will get a bed, the (sometimes) exclusive use of a bathroom, clean sheets towels and breakfast in the morning.
Go with the flow. If you are trying B&B's on the countryside in Europe, you might be invited for dinner with the family. If you have time, accept the invitation and get an insight in local family life.
The further out the more welcome. B&B's in cities tend to be more elaborate, with amenities and such. The further you get out in the bush, jungle or the country side, the more Spartan you can expect it to be. But the locals will be the more hospitable. They will treat you as a long awaited guest. Be courteous back.

Ask and you shall receive.
Ask the innkeepers about things to see and do. They live there, they are part of the community and you can easily find out what is going on in the neighborhoods.
Keep quiet. B&B's are the homes of the innkeepers. They work all day to cater to you, at night they need their rest. B&B walls are usually thinner and less soundproof than chain hotels. Be considerate of them and your neighbors.
Send a post card. You send cards to the folks back home. A nice thank you note to the innkeepers when you get home will not only make them happy, it will make your next stay SO much better. They will remember you and welcome you warmly to their home...just as visiting good friends.
