Harmony

The thought of harmony brings joy. Harmonies in song make the sound more full and rich, but for our society to live in harmony has always been an impossible, unobtainable nirvana. HUMAN RACE, wake up. Harmony is not only possible it is essential for the continued existence of life on planet earth.

Intolerance is intolerable.

To make a system, such as an engine or a society sustainable, all parts have to be in balance and they all need proper lubrication, they must work in harmony. If we apply this to our lives we see that we are nowhere near achieving harmony. Not with each other, or with our planet.

Harmony with the environment can be achieved, organic food is a good example, where by naturally nourishing the soil, all the parts then work together to form a harmony. Renewable energy and hydrogen harmonize well with the planet.

If we all tried to live in harmony not just with the environment but with each other we may set off a harmonic that could bring on an age like we've never imagined. Where everyone makes at least a living wage and are proud of the work that they do. Imagine all the new customers there would be.

A main cause of misery on this planet is greed. If the mantra of our society was in the harmony of existence, where the arts were as important as the dollars and profits and wages were fair, what a far better place this would be than that of Corporate America today with their greedy take as much as they can get philosophy, with no care for achieving any kind of balance.

Wake up and feel the harmony around you, listen to it and then add to it. Unprovoked acts of kindness, or add beauty by planting gardens and trees, or through art and the arts, please eat and support organic, empower the planet and above all vote out greed before you can't.

Harmony is not about power it will empower, it is not a revolution it is an evolution, so become a "harmonist" and bring joy and beauty to the world around you.

The National Parks Scrapbook

It is easy to think that the natural world is an inexhaustible reservoir of beauty, but threats that would compromise it abound. Nowhere else is this more evident than in America's National Park System. Tens of millions of visitors every year make pilgrimages to the park system's 385 units, but their opportunities to enjoy the beauty and grandeur of the parks are becoming increasingly limited because the national parks are critically underfunded.

For example, the Grand Canyon - one of the geological wonders of the world - does not have a geologist on staff, compromising the ability of the Park Service to protect this awe-inspiring place. More than 1,000 archaeological sites of several Indian cultures, including cave paintings and pottery shards, lie within the boundaries of Santa Monica
Mountains National Recreation Area-unexamined by archaeologists and historians and unknown to visitors. Due to staffing limitations and inadequate visitor facilities, ranger tours and education programs reach less than five percent of Gettysburg's nearly 2 million park visitors annually. A shortage of rangers also leaves Yellowstone's backcountry vulnerable to poaching and other illegal activities, impedes emergency response time, and provides limited educational opportunities for hikers.

Americans for National Parks - a nationwide coalition of nonprofit organizations, private businesses, government agencies, and trade associations - is building public demand for the protection and preservation of our majestic National Park System.

You can help. Share your photos and park memories in the virtual National Parks Scrapbook by clicking here so we can all be inspired to help preserve these majestic places. The Americans for National Parks coalition will share the entries posted online with members of Congress and the president as evidence of public concern and affection for the national parks and support for increased funding. Because there's just too much to lose.

Bag It!
by Michael Anderson

The average American uses one thousand plastic shopping bags per year! Multiply that by 270 million Americans and you get a pretty ugly picture.

Sadly, only a very small percentage of these are recycled.

A friend of mine who worked on fishing boats in Mexico once told me that plastic bags drifting down from the United States killed more sea life than everything else combined.
So what’s a shopper to do? Well, paper bags are better than plastic, but not anywhere near as good as canvas bags. Canvas bags are very strong, you don’t have to look for a basket when you get to the store, and most grocers give a nickel back each time you use it. I always have several in the trunk of my car, and a bunch of mesh bags for produce.

If your Health food store doesn’t carry them, you can buy them online at:

Don Brawley believes environmentalists can help their cause even in death.

His company, Eternal Reefs, Inc. is an Atlanta-based company that allows the deceased to spend the afterlife as part of an artificial reef, which serves as a home to fish and other marine life for at least 500 years.

Cremated remains are added to the concrete of an artificial reef unit being cast. The Memorial Reefs are deployed to permitted locations at sea. Memorial Reefs are placed in locations where they are most ecologically needed. More than 1,500 different reef sites have been created worldwide. The sites are approved in areas designated appropriate by federal, state and local governments.

The artificial reefs are dedicated as permanent memorials while also bolstering natural coast reef formations, Brawley said.

“Even in death, you can help life,” he said. “Artificial reefs are becoming increasingly important as environmental degradation occurs around the world. The reefs provide homes to countless fish and they help maintain a sense of balance in the sea.”

Brawley created the company in response to a request by his father-in-law to be buried at sea. At the time, Brawley was working with a company called Reef Ball Development Group, which creates artificial reefs to rebuild deteriorating reefs across the world.

His father-in-law requested to be cremated when he passed away and asked Brawley to put him in one of his artificial reefs.

“He wanted to be buried at sea,” Brawley said. “He told me, “It can’t think of anything better than having all that action going on around me all the time after I am gone - just make sure that the location has lots of red snapper and grouper.’”

When his father-in-law passed on in 1998, it stirred something soft inside Brawley.

“We were able to oblige him when he passed on,“ he said. “And when I told people about it, there was a positive response. So we started Eternal Reefs.”

He said the response has been overwhelming.

“People are becoming more aware of (options),” he said. “And they want to be a part of a recovering ecosystem, and to help the environment. Response has been positive, and we’ve been very busy.”

The cremation rate in the United States has gone from 2 percent of deaths in 1980 to 27 percent in 2000, and is expected to exceed 45 percent by 2010. According to a major casket and urn manufacturer about 45 percent of individuals that have chosen cremation still have the remains at home sitting on a shelf or in a closet.

Prices for the reefs run between $850 and $3,200.

Brawley said there’s never been a stronger need for artificial reefs.

“Over the years man has done a great deal of damage to the seas and oceans of our world,” he said. “Many natural reefs have been destroyed and over-fished. Establishing new reefs is a tool that is used to take the pressure off the natural reef systems and help repair the damage that has been done by mankind. The Memorial reefs provide a nurturing environment for fish and other forms of sea life that are critical to the environment.”

These are some great
reduce, reuse, recycle
tips from our readers! Send us yours!

" I like to keep my empty gallon milk jugs outside and let fill with water. I put the lids on them when they get full and poke holes in the bottom or sides and set in my garden or flower beds so they will water them without having to use extra water from the hose. I also keep some without holes to use to rinse off garden tools or put away for a sunny day. If you keep them in a cool dark place they keep for at least a month. Jerri Wingenbach"

" What a great site! My tip for a way to recycle is after removing corn on the cob, save the cob, and dry, and save. In the winter, Cover with natural peanut butter, and roll in seeds, for a treat the birds love. This is a great project for the kids, and a lot easier to do than pinecones. Kim Nicholson"

" I use old pantyhose cut in strips to tie my tomato plants to my stakes. They stretch real nicely while the plant grows. Much better than twist ties. Anonymous"

" Our shower is on the second floor & our water heater is in the basement. Before showering I always use a gallon milk jug to catch the water as I'm waiting for it to warm. During the winter this is the only water we use for our (many) houseplants. Thank you for your support! John Varner - New Milford, NJ"
