New
Ocean Group Launches OceansAtRisk.com!
Massive
Waste of Marine Life Puts Oceans At Risk
Every
day, thousands of fish, whales, dolphins, turtles, and other
endangered marine life are drowned, crushed, and suffocated after
being caught on fishing hooks and nets meant for other species. They
are often tossed back into the ocean, dead or dying.
An
estimated 44 billion pounds of fish are wasted annually – 25
percent of the entire world catch.
Four
Federal laws clearly require the U.S. to end this senseless waste of
our valuable ocean species. But, the government agency in charge has
failed to put these laws into action.
That’s
why Oceana is launching a campaign,
OceansAtRisk.com,
to end the massive waste of marine life by U.S. fishing operations. Oceana is a new international group dedicated to protecting
the world’s oceans from destructive fishing and pollution.
A
few examples of ocean life at risk due to destructive fishing:
Harbor Porpoises.
Each year in the US, more than 1,200 of these intelligent creatures
become entangled in thin mesh nets, where, trapped underwater, they
suffocate and drown.
Pacific
Sea Turtles.
These giant turtles often fall victim to hooks baited for other
species or become entangled in fishing nets floating in the ocean.
Thousands of turtles die needlessly each year, pushing them closer
to extinction.
Alaska
Seabirds.
Each year 20,000 Alaska seabirds are caught on huge fishhooks that
rip through their mouths, holding them under water as they struggle
to stay afloat, until they finally sink and drown.
“Industrial
fishing vessels strip mine the ocean of life,” explained Dr.
Michael Hirshfield, Oceana’s Vice President for Science. “From
disappearing sea otters in Alaska to dying coral reefs in Florida,
our oceans and the circle of life are clearly more at risk than
ever. When we take too
much life out of the oceans, we put our food supplies, our coastal
economies, and even ourselves at risk.”
OceansAtRisk.com
is a great new resource for people concerned about the fate of our
oceans. At the site, visitors can:
-
Learn
more about the threat to sea creatures like the harbor porpoise,
Alaskan seabirds, and endangered sea turtles.
-
Take
an interactive quiz that teaches visitors about destructive
fishing gear.
-
Explore
a dynamic map that illustrates local destructive fishing
practices around the U.S.
-
Send
a free letter to President Bush in support of protecting ocean
life.
-
Spread
the word via free e-cards with unusual photographs of birds, sea
turtles and porpoises (a few even show actual animals entangled
in fishing gear).
We
need your help to end this senseless destruction of ocean life.
Please take 30 seconds to visit www.OceansAtRisk.com

oceans; let’s give something back.
Oceans
provide 95 percent of the living space for the earth’s animals and
plants, and are the largest source of protein in the world,
feeding billions of people around the globe.
