Our bird posters
feature colorful tropical species, familiar backyard birds, rarely seen
species from the American wilderness and even birds native to far-off
lands like Africa and Antarctica. Browse the categories to the right to
find whole galleries devoted to a single species, like bluebirds,
goldfinches, flamingoes, and more!
Because birds are
one of the most colorful and diverse animals on the planet, you can find
them in a huge variety of colors to match any room décor. Male birds
typically have the most brilliant plumage, as they need to attract
the attention of the females. Their female counterparts can be dull or
muted, as they need to blend into the background scenery to protect
themselves and their nest. For example, the female mallard is a dull
brown, perhaps to blend in with the muddy shores where mallards nest.
On the other hand, the bright red male tanager sheds its beautiful
feathers when the mating season is over, adopting a dull brown coat for
the cold season. These stunning scarlet tanagers, which can be found
deep in North American forests during summer, are threatened by
deforestation and forest fragmentation.
You’ll notice that
many of our bird posters are beautiful color photographs, in addition to
paintings and drawings. Bird photographers probably have the most
difficult job of all wildlife photographers because these animals are nearly
constantly in motion. Even when they are resting in a tree, slight bobs
and twists can cause an image to blur. In fact, some photographers keep
less than 1% of the bird images they actually shoot; consuming hundreds
of exposures and many roles of film to get an acceptable shot. They
also need to get incredibly close to their subjects, climbing through
brush and even into trees. Birds will often appear as a splash of color
on the photo, lacking any detail, even if the photographer is using a
powerful lens.
